The Chivas seem to be running with the pelota - however my team won last night! _________________ http://www.vivaveracruz.com/blog/ |

I don't know.... they kick the ball here...they kick the ball there... next game same scenario... I just can't get into it... pass me a shot of tequila.
If they would play the game with machetes I might start watching it.
The Aztecs had the right idea... rip the hearts out of the winners & offer it to the Sun god.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I guess its in the blood... at the Archeological site of Cantona (about 50 miles from Apizaco) they've found 27 ball fields...
The indiginous natives had different ways of playing..they didn't always ripp their hearts out...although that was considered a great honor, it was almost like being declared as a god. They only did that during special religious rituals.
Everyday games were also exciting, If someone scored a goal by kicking the ball through a small stone hoop attached to a side wall..then all the spectaters would jump up and run like hell...and the ball players would take off after them... if they caught someone the person they caught had to give them all their earthly posessions. That made ballgame watching very tricky. See people are crazy...even a thousand years ago. _________________ Visit my blog and learn more about Tlaxcala.

I can't make up my mind - watching the highlights can almost be enough because as you suggest Bob the game can be slow (slower than watching paint dry).
But then I am a total fan of watching golf which has also been accused of being slower than paint drying
At least I haven't succumbed to wrestling - that is one that REALLY has me wondering - WHY anyone would watch? _________________ http://www.vivaveracruz.com/blog/ |

That is the key John, watching. Watching is not sport. Playing and competing is sport. I am not preaching here; I realize that many people enjoy watching sport--most of my male relatives do. I could never get into it; the passivity, like Mr. Cox says.
We used to play baseball on our block here in Cordoba. Then I went away for a few months and when we returned, the games had dissolved??? Oh well, Ania and I still like to hike in the mountains. _________________ frank & ania, las magnolias B&B |

I admit it - I watch golf and soccer (futbol). I guess I like the fact you can do other things and watch the replays of the exciting parts.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy baseball so much.
Have any of the folks on the list gone to see Veracruz Winter League beisbol games? Cities with a team in the league include Xalapa (Chileros), Veracruz (Rojos) and Cordoba (Cafeteros). |

I have been wanting to go see a baseball game (or more) at the stadium in Xalapa - when you come back Jeff - we will go. _________________ http://www.vivaveracruz.com/blog/ |

I would like that, John. However, the Xalapa Chileros play in the Veracruz *Winter* League -- their season starts in October and is over by mid-January, I believe.
When we visited Xalapa in April '09, we walked over to Estadio Colon. Sitting outside the ballpark (though there was no game) was an elderly man, who said he was the head groundskeeper. He was kind enough to open the gates and let Vivian and me in to wander around a bit. The facility seemed to be in good repair and would be a nice place to both play and watch a game.
Apparently, they play softball there, too.
